The Ministry of Culture has officially declared the Wakan Archaeological Site, located in the district of Paucar, in the province of Daniel Alcides Carrión, Pasco region, as Peru National Cultural Heritage.

This was established by Viceministerial Resolution No. 000347-2024-VMPCIC/MC, published in the Legal Resolutions bulletin of the Official Gazette El Peruano.

The resolution indicates that the decision is based on the technical report of the Cadastre and Legal Physical Regularization Office of the Ministry of Culture, which proposed the declaration and delimitation of the site as a pre-Hispanic real estate property forming part of the National Cultural Heritage.

The Wakan Archaeological Site covers an area of 31,288.67 square meters and has a perimeter of 746.70 meters.

The resolution highlights that the Wakan Archaeological Site is significant as a settlement associated with the Yaro society, characterized by semi-circular and quadrangular structures, and its architectural magnitude and layout provide the site great importance and pre-Hispanic archaeological value, justifying its preservation, conservation, and safeguarding.

Additionally, it notes that the pre-Hispanic archaeological value of the Wakan Archaeological Site is evidenced by the spatial planning and use, where structures are arranged following the terrain's surface and adapting to its relief.

This reflects the classic Yaro architectural pattern for constructing residential areas, which is associated with the Late Intermediate period.

The resolution emphasizes that Wakan's significance as an archaeological area of great importance in the district of Paucar, lies in its role as part of the collective history of the population. It serves as both a cultural space and a historical landmark for the Tángor community, recognized as their own heritage.

The resolution entrusts the Regional Culture Office of Pasco, in coordination with the General Office of Real Estate Archaeological Heritage, to ensure compliance with Agreement 2 described in the resolution.

The resolution will be communicated to the Tángor peasant community, the District Municipality of Paucar, the Provincial Municipality of Daniel Alcides Carrión, the Regional Office of Tourism – Pasco, the Regional Culture Office of Pasco, and the National Superintendence of State Property to ensure its inclusion in territorial planning initiatives.

The resolution is signed by the Deputy Minister of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Industries, Jamer Nelson Chávez Anticona.
