Peruvian and Italian FA Ministers strengthen ties to boost cooperation, investment

During a meeting held in Rome on Tuesday, Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer and Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the bilateral relationship, which marked 150 years of diplomatic ties in 2024.

The dignitaries underscored the importance of promoting high-level visits, as these accelerate and expand bilateral relations. 

They welcomed the recent meeting of the Peru-Italy Political Consultations Mechanism, which reached promising agreements for both countries.

Minister Schialer emphasized that Italy is Peru's fourth-largest trading partner in the European Union, with trade reaching US$1.6 billion in 2024.

In this regard, he expressed the government's willingness to promote closer ties between business entities from both countries, aiming to promptly hold a Business Forum meeting in Peru, an initiative boosted by Minister Tajani.

The Cabinet member emphasized that Peru seeks to attract sustainable, responsible, and inclusive investments, which are essential for national development and for narrowing the infrastructure gap.

The Peruvian diplomat commended Italy, whose investment reached US$175.6 million in 2024, reaffirming its interest in contributing to development by identifying investment opportunities in infrastructure, railways, and renewable energy.

Minister Schialer also expressed our country's interest in having the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and the Italo-Latin American Organization continue and expand their cooperation in Peru in 2026.

Moreover, he highlighted the vital collaboration in the fight against illicit drug trafficking and transnational organized crime, carried out through programs such as Brincolines and COPOLAD III.

Lastly, the Peruvian senior official underscored the importance of advancing the implementation of key agreements for the migrant population. In this regard, the Peruvian community in Italy exceeds 350,000 people.

The establishment of a bilateral consultation mechanism on consular and migration matters is being promoted, along with the continuation of negotiations for the reciprocal recognition of driver's licenses.
