The National Elections Board (JNE) reminded citizens that October 13, 2025, is the deadline for authorities and senior officials wishing to run in the 2026 General Elections to submit their resignation, in compliance with electoral regulations.
According to Resolution No. 0110-2025-JNE, senior officials who decide to run (including ministers, deputy ministers, governors, deputy governors, and mayors) must submit their resignation by Monday, October 13, 2025, six months before the elections.
The rule also applies to members of the Peruvian National Police and Armed Forces, who must enter retirement if they wish to participate in the electoral process.
In the case of regional governors, the resignation must be submitted to the regional council and the position forwarded to the JNE via the Virtual Filing Desk by October 20, 2025.
Thus, the vice governor will immediately assume the role. If both resign, the regional council will elect their replacements.
In turn, mayors must submit their resignation to the municipal council and forward the position to the JNE within the same deadline, with the acting mayor assuming office using credentials from the electoral body.
Leave for public officials
For officials and employees in the public sector, resignation is not required. Instead, they must request unpaid leave from their respective institution.
The JNE specified that this leave must be granted starting February 11, 2026, that is, 60 days before the elections.
In all cases, resignation or leave documents must be submitted as an official filing to the corresponding special electoral board when registering the candidacy.
Purpose of the measure
The electoral body stated that these provisions aim to provide clarity to political organizations and ensure compliance with legal requirements when submitting candidate lists and slates for the 2026 General Elections.
