Peru to be among world's Top 20 food suppliers

00:00 | Lima, Aug. 29.

Peru is on its way to becoming one of the 20 largest food suppliers in the world, Fresh Fruit Peru has informed.

Within this framework, the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru), as well as the Association of Peruvian Farming Producers (AGAP) participated in the presentation of the third Fresh Report.

According to the agro-exports commercial intelligence agency, the South American country currently holds the 20th position in vegetable exports and the 12th position among fruit suppliers

It should be noted fruit shipments value went from US$380 million (2008) to US$2.998 billion (2018).

Avocados, mangoes, grapes, tangerines, and pomegranates are expected to place Peru among the world's Top 5 exporters of these products.

According to Fresh Fruit Peru General Manager Luis Corvera, the Inca nation will be among the globe's 15 largest food suppliers in the next 10 years, especially because of the large markets available in Asian countries such as: China, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Viet Nam, and India.

Potential

Furthermore, Foreign Affairs Ministry Secretary-General Manuel Talavera pointed out "agriculture has a significant potential in order to contribute to the sustainable growth of Peru, thus helping reduce poverty."

For his part, PromPeru Chairman Luis Torres underlined the goal is to reach US$10 billion in agro-exports in 2021.

Moreover, AGAP Executive-Director Gabriel Amaro said the nation has grown in a dynamic manner and had a positive evolution in 2018.

"Only between fruits and vegetables, there was a 22% increase compared to 2017. (…) However, the challenge is to diversify our portfolio and seek for markets with greater opportunities (ahead)," he added.
