The "Aula de los Sentidos, Manos que Ven" (The Senses Classroom – Hands That See) was inaugurated at the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex in Trujillo province, La Libertad region, northern Peru.

The classroom is a space designed to bring cultural heritage closer to people with disabilities.

This inauguration took place as part of the Open Museums program, which this October commemorates National Disability Day.

The Ministry of Culture's Decentralized Directorate in La Libertad region was in charge of implementing this space.

This room allows visitors to sense carefully-replicated Chan Chan reliefs in an environment specially designed to promote accessibility.

The inauguration was led by Deputy Cultural Heritage and Cultural Industries Minister Moira Novoa.

The government official underscored that this space reinforces the sector's commitment to democratizing access to heritage and promoting an inclusive culture.

"The Senses Classroom represents an important step toward equal opportunities to enjoy and understand our cultural heritage," Novoa stated.

"We want everyone, without exception, to be able to learn about and appreciate the heritage that unites us as a country," she added.

Additionally, the Chan Chan Site Museum received a donation of seven wheelchairs.

The assistance devices will be available for visitors with disabilities or reduced mobility, allowing them to have a better experience during their museum tour.

As on every first Sunday of the month, the Open Museums program took place, allowing free entry to more than 50 Peruvian State-run museums and archaeological sites across the country.

The Chan Chan Museum, located in the Villa del Mar area of Huanchaco district in Trujillo, is part of the program.

About the museum

The Chan Chan Site Museum was established in March 1990 and is located in the eastern part of the Chan Chan Monumental Archaeological Zone.

The museum showcases the prehispanic cultural development of La Libertad region, from the earliest lithic artifacts to the ceramics of the Moche and Chimu cultures.

It explores topics related to agriculture, irrigation techniques, and crops cultivated in the Moche Valley.

It also features a computerized room that tells the story of the origin and development of the Chimor lordship.
