Peru: Fujimori needs to undergo cardiac procedure, says INPE

19:01 | Lima, Oct. 4.

Imprisoned former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) needs to undergo "an invasive cardiac procedure" that will require intensive care. To that end, he will be taken to a local clinic, the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) said on Monday.

In a recent statement, INPE indicated that Fujimori had to be taken from Lima-based Barbadillo Prison to Centenario Clinic as it was certified that his health had deteriorated.

Geriatrics and cardiology specialists at said medical facility decided to admit him to ICU, as well as to carry out a series of tests and analyses.

Doctors told INPE that Fujimori "needs to undergo an invasive cardiac procedure that requires the availability of a bed in ICU."

"As part of his private insurance coverage, inmate Fujimori will be taken to another local clinic, always complying with the safety protocols," it was reported.

INPE stated that it would inform the relatives about the measures taken by the specialists, "in accordance with the regular procedures during emergency health evacuations of persons deprived of liberty."

In addition, the penitentiary institution will take the necessary actions to ensure that the ex-president receives medical attention.

As is known, Fujimori currently serves a 25-year sentence in prison for the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta cases, which involved human rights abuses, in addition to the kidnappings of a journalist and a businessman in 1992.

This sentence was then ratified by Peruvian courts, which determined that Fujimori was responsible for crimes such as qualified homicide, assassination, and serious injuries in the Barrios Altos, La Cantuta, and Army Intelligence Service cases.

The sentence was unanimously confirmed by the Supreme Court on January 3, 2010.
