Peru: Fujimori taken to clinic, says lawyer

13:18 | Huacho (Lima region), Oct. 2.

Imprisoned former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) was taken to a local clinic due to oxygen saturation issues, his attorney Cesar Nakazaki reported on Saturday.

Via Twitter, Nakazaki indicated that Fujimori —who is serving a 25-year sentence at Lima-based Barbadillo Prison— was hospitalized on Friday night.

"Former President (Alberto) Fujimori was rushed to Centenario Clinic last night due to a serious oxygen saturation problem, as I understand it, which he did not overcome despite receiving medical care at Barbadillo (…)," he said.

As is known, Fujimori currently serves a 25-year sentence in prison for the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta cases, which involved human rights abuses, in addition to the kidnappings of a journalist and a businessman in 1992.

This sentence was then ratified by Peruvian courts, which determined that Fujimori was responsible for crimes such as qualified homicide, assassination, and serious injuries in the Barrios Altos, La Cantuta, and Army Intelligence Service cases.

The sentence was unanimously confirmed by the Supreme Court on January 3, 2010.
