Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Cesar Landa on Wednesday reported that his portfolio has informed the Council of Ministers of the 52nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) to be held in Lima from October 5 to 7.

At a press conference, following the Council of Ministers session on Wednesday, the minister remarked that the next OAS General Assembly will bring together 35 States of the Americas and is intended to work on issues of equality and the fight against discrimination.

The government official pointed out that the scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the war in Europe, have an impact on food security and the rise of fuel prices, which affects the most vulnerable populations.

In this regard, he stressed the importance for the inter-American community to come together in order to work on various issues that appear on the agenda of each country.

For example, the Cabinet member affirmed that he plans to provide statements on social aspects of the fight for equality and non-discrimination, as well as the recovery and strengthening of an inclusive and resilient health system.

Likewise, Minister Landa mentioned that the General Assembly will discuss the situation of food and nutrition security in the Americas in a bid to propose solutions.

Other topics to be discussed include the regular follow-up on the promotion and protection of human rights, hemispheric initiatives on integral development, the strengthening of democracy, international law, and the promotion of hemispheric security using a multidimensional approach.

Likewise, the OAS General Assembly in Lima will address the increased and strengthened participation of civil society and social actors in the activities undertaken by the American States, as well as the support and follow-up of the Summits of the Americas, among other issues.

The high-ranking official stated that other activities will be held in parallel to the OAS General Assembly in Lima, such as a meeting with the youth of the Americas, as well as civil society and business forums.
