, through Deputy Tourism Minister Aracelly Laca, held a high-level meeting with UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nowais.
The meeting aimed to boost strategic projects focused on sustainable development, innovation, and the competitiveness of Peruvian destinations.
The event was held as part of the activities leading up to the 126th session of the UN Tourism Executive Council in Toledo, Spain, on June 10–11.
It helped strengthen joint efforts between Peru and the sector's leading international organization, while accelerating initiatives that will directly benefit Peruvian regions.
Among the prioritized initiatives are training programs for small tourism businesses located in areas with tourism potential.
These efforts aim to strengthen management capabilities, promote sustainable practices, and improve service accessibility, contributing to a more competitive and inclusive tourism offering.
Peru's participation in Toledo is particularly significant, as it strengthens the country's leadership and standing within UN Tourism.
This comes at a time when Peru is taking on strategic responsibilities within the organization's main governing bodies.
Peru currently serves on the UN Tourism Executive Council—the organization's highest governing body—for the 2025–2027 term. It also holds the Presidency of the Programme and Budget Committee (PBC).
The Secretary-General thanked Peru for its active participation in the PBC.
She stated that the South American country is exercising a responsible and transparent presidency within the subsidiary body—one of the most important bodies of the organization's Executive Council—in line with her administration's priorities.
In this context, Deputy Minister Laca will chair the PBC meeting on June 10.
Key issues to be discussed include the implementation of the institutional work program, UN Tourism's financial situation, and preparations for the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism 2027.
It is worth noting that Peru is promoting its candidacy to host the 128th session of the UN Tourism Executive Council in 2027.
The initiative would strengthen the country's international profile and consolidate its role as one of the leading references for sustainable tourism in the region.
As part of her official agenda in Spain, the Peruvian Deputy Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni and South Korean Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Daehyun Kim.
The meetings aim to strengthen cooperation in innovation, digitalization, sustainability, and destination management.
