Peru: Chan Chan conservation, restoration efforts advance to protect cultural heritage

The Ministry of Culture —through the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex Special Project (Pecach)— is carrying out various maintenance, emergency conservation, and trail improvement actions at the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex, located in northern La Libertad region.

The initiative aims to protect structures affected by the rains and enhance visitor conditions at this site, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The work focuses on the conservation of structures along the tourist route of the walled complex Nik An, the Arco Iris Huaca, and the La Esmeralda Huaca.

At Nik An (formerly Tschudi), work has focused on the Audiencias and Ardillas sectors, where protective coverings were reinforced with wooden slats.

Similarly, damaged fiberboard sheets were replaced, preventing water from entering the relief-adorned walls.

Likewise, maintenance was carried out on the drainage systems by replacing damaged gutters and removing materials that blocked the flow of water.

To carry out these actions, Pecach contracted technical and field services. It also acquired the materials, equipment, and products necessary to ensure safe and efficient work.

In the context of emergency conservation work, the Toledo Huaca was intervened, especially on its north and west façades, which were affected by the rainfall.

Additionally, a new trail was opened to enhance viewing of the monument: 280.60 m² on the north esplanade and 108.40 m² on the west façade.

In this area, work was also carried out to transport materials, prepare mortar, construct a water well, and clear vegetation over an area of 120 m².

Currently, the technical team is continuing work on Nik An’s eastern sector, which will connect with the existing routes in the central and western areas.

This new section will feature geoblocks and permeable synthetic pavements, materials that protect the archaeological floors and facilitate movement during the rainy season.
