The Peruvian government has announced it has created a new conservation area in the Amazon.
According to the Ministry of Environment, the government has recognized the Bosque de Palmeras, in Molinopampa, Amazonas, as a Private Conservation Area.
The area, which covers 10,920 hectares, would be protected for a period of 40 years, the ministry said.
Bosque de Palmeras is the ninth private conservation area in the department of Amazonas, in northern Peru, website Peruthisweek.com reported.
The area, the ministry said, is unique in the region, and home to a number of species, which, according to several studies, are endangered.
Sernap – the country’s natural areas protection agency – said that establishing protected areas was essential to the process of mitigating the effects of climate change.
