Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer on Thursday announced that 74 compatriots are being held at a United States' immigration detention center and will be deported once the relevant process is completed.
The diplomat indicated that he is in talks with the authorities of that country, although he did not provide details about the situation of those Peruvian citizens or when they would be returned to their homeland.
As is known, in recent days there have been a series of actions against illegal Latino immigrants in the United States by order of President Donald Trump, who took office on January 20, 2025.
"In the United States, we understand that 74 Peruvians are being held at this detention center. They will be deported once the process has been completed," Schialer told reporters.
"We are ensuring that all international standards of human dignity are met, while also ensuring that national laws are followed," he added.
On the other hand, the ambassador indicated that one of the four Peruvians who were missing in Venezuela has been found.
Schialer added that around 40 formal and unofficial efforts have already been undertaken for the other three compatriots.
"Initially, there were up to four (missing Peruvians); one has already been found, but we don't know where the other Peruvians are, how they are, or what specific situation they are in. We still don't know anything about that," he said.
The
Minister of Foreign Affairs made these remarks after participating in an event to commemorate the Day of Peruvian-Chinese Brotherhood.
It was held at the Congress of the Republic, where the historical ties and cooperation between both countries were recognized.
