Peru needs a creative, democratic, and constitutional way out of its political crisis, Peruvian Cardinal Monsignor Pedro Barreto said on Monday.

In an interview with RPP, the Cardinal remarked that in order to overcome the political situation, the way out lies in early elections and the resignation of the Head of State.

According to Barreto, during this time, the Church has expressed willingness to reach out to the country, not to a Government, because it has always been sought the common good to face the different levels of political, economic, and moral decomposition.

In addition, the leading dignitary of the Roman Catholic Church underscored that crime within politics has reached an intolerable level.

"All citizens have to make an effort because the good of Peru is involved (...). We have to join forces in a clear manner, with principles and values," the Cardinal emphasized.

"It is time to join efforts to be able to transform Peru," he added.

The high ecclesiastical official stressed the importance to be aware that after every crisis, countries are not in the same situation, but in worse or better condition, and joining efforts should be the goal, seeking a democratic and
 constitutional solution.

After referring that the ethical and moral issue in the country is not new, Barreto said that he is convinced there are Peruvians who practice justice instead of contributing to the crisis.

Under said premise, the Cardinal affirmed that he is in favor of a political transition, under which the President would step aside and Congress would call for early general elections.

"We have to rehabilitate politics," he pointed out.
