APEC Peru 2024: Over 270 meetings and 15 consensus-approved documents

09:34 | Lima, Nov. 11.

More than 270 meetings were held in Urubamba, Arequipa, Trujillo, Pucallpa, and Lima during Peru's third time hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which concludes this week with the Asia-Pacific Leaders' Meeting, as highlighted by Ambassador Carlos Chavez-Taffur, Chair of the APEC Peru 2024 Presidency Working Group.

"Peru has managed to bring to the table about 15 projects, all of which were approved by consensus among member economies —consensus that we successfully restored in Peru after two years in which it had not been achieved at previous meetings," the ambassador underlined during an interview with Andina News Agency.

"We are very pleased; we still have a couple of documents left," Chavez-Taffur noted.

"The ministers of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, who will meet on the 14th, are already in a drafting session to review the texts (of the document), followed by the final declaration," he indicated.

The diplomat also highlighted the 'APEC for the People' initiative, which was carried out under the Peruvian presidency and included over 100 activities with the participation of companies like Google, Microsoft, and others.

"The Leaders' Week is the most important event on the APEC calendar; it marks the conclusion of a hosting year, with several preparatory meetings leading up to, and culminating in, the gathering of leaders from Asia-Pacific member economies," he explained.

Approximately 5,000 delegates have registered for the final week of APEC Peru 2024, including 1,300 business leaders and 2,500 journalists.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
