The 21 member economies on Thursday adopted the
forum taking place in the city of Arequipa, southern Peru.
This is the first statement on female citizens adopted by consensus after two years of intense work (2022-2023), representing a major achievement for APEC Peru 2024.
Following the mandate established in La Serena Roadmap, as well as the
APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040, the statement adopted in
Arequipa reiterates the call for economies to redouble their efforts with the aim of adopting measures that contribute to the economic empowerment of women across the Asia-Pacific region.
Within this framework, the agreed-upon text prioritizes issues such as access to education and training in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers; financial inclusion; and the use of technological tools to prevent violence against female citizens, through the use of the internet and other digital media.
Likewise, the aforementioned multilateral instrument acknowledges the vulnerability of women to the occurrence of natural disasters and the negative impacts of climate change.
The Statement of Arequipa will constitute an important basis for the implementation of concrete measures that economies can adopt to tackle the aforementioned challenges.
