Peru's Permanent Mission to the International Organizations based in Geneva submitted on Monday former Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea's candidacy for the position of Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) for the 2027-2032 term.
The election will be held on November 16 through a secret ballot, and the new Director-General's term will begin on October 1, 2027.
During his tenure as head of Peru's Foreign Affairs Ministry, Gonzalez-Olaechea represented Peru before multiple international organizations and strengthened the country's ties with the ILO.
Likewise, he led the negotiation and signing of international instruments with countries and international organizations.
The former minister served as a senior official at the ILO, worked as an adviser to Ambassador Javier Perez de Cuellar—a former Secretary-General of the United Nations—and held positions at the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM), the Ministry of Interior, and the Ministry of Energy-Mines.
Drawing on his solid academic background and extensive public- and private-sector experience, international relations expert González-Olaechea presented his proposal with a view to his election as Director-General of the ILO.
The proposal was titled "A Dignified Life in the Disruptive Era."
In this document, he offers a holistic vision of the present and future challenges, knowledge of the ILO, experience in public administration, an understanding of the world of work, and negotiation skills to lead the international organization while upholding its values and principles in pursuit of a decent life.
His commitment is to renew without dividing, reform without weakening, and anticipate in order to protect.
As part of the lead-up to the election, the candidates will present their proposals in Geneva on September 23 before the full ILO Governing Body and representatives of all 187 countries that make up the organization.
The sessions will be chaired by current Governing Body Chairman Matthew Wilson and broadcast live through the organization's official channels.
Through the presentation of this candidacy, the Government of Peru reaffirms its commitment to the ILO.
