President: Peru should reach bicentennial with new authorities

12:46 | Junin (Junin region), Aug. 6.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed Peru must be given the opportunity to reach the Independence Bicentennial (2021) with new authorities elected by the population.

According to the Head of State, the Inca country's common enemies are corruption and poverty, scourges which will be defeated by citizens' unity

"We must work together and united, so Peru —by its Independence Bicentennial— can be a renovated nation, with expectations for the future, that has eliminated corruption and strengthened its democracy with citizen participation at the polls," the top official expressed.

Likewise, he indicated that —when the country sets goals, as well as works committed and united— it achieves its objectives, as proven by Junin-born Gladys Tejeda, who won gold at Lima 2019 Pan American Games women's marathon.

In this sense, the statesman pointed out the triumph is an example that conviction, as well as the commitment to fighting for and serving the nation, keeps running through Peruvians' veins.

Support for agriculture

He went on to add this economic sector has not been assisted over recent years, and it is necessary to guarantee farmers receive a minimum wage so they are able to produce more goods.

Remarks were made during the 195th anniversary ceremony of the Battle of Junin.
