The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Monday affirmed that the approval of a presidential vacancy would jeopardize the continued economic growth and generate uncertainty in its future —after several months of recovery.

While exercising his right to defense at Parliament headquarters during an impeachment motion session, the Head of State specified that these "are hard times" for all Peruvians —especially— the most vulnerable citizens, in addition to
those who had lost their jobs and had to close their businesses because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this sense, the top official explained that said vacancy would generate fears of lack of viability and institutionalism, "which would bring serious economic consequences."

The top official added that the vacancy could not only damage the President of the Republic, but the entire nation because it would lead "to a scenario of unforeseeable consequences."

"The worst thing we can do right now is to plunge the country into a scenario of greater turmoil and instability, enter a process of uncertainty where no one knows what will happen. It would place everyone in an uncertain and complex situation. This is understood by regional governors and mayors in Peru, as well as by farmers and residents of the country," he concluded.

On November 2, Parliament approved to debate the second impeachment motion against the Head of State, which was submitted by Union Por el Peru (UPP) party and other legislators.

The lawmakers cited a "permanent moral incapacity" of the President of the Republic, as established in Article 113 of the Constitution.

According to the regulations of Congress, the presidential vacancy motion requires at least 87 votes to be approved.
