Peruvian Prime Minister Walter Martos has urged Congress members to put aside confrontations and listen to the population that is tired of requests for presidential vacancies, while it requires stability.

"Sincerely, we are concerned about the country; that is why I ask Congress to listen to the population. We listen to the people who consider that the vacancy would generate an unnecessary crisis. We need to stand united, and we must stop the confrontations (...)," he said in remarks to Punto Final investigative journalism TV show on Sunday night.

The high-ranking official remarked that various opinion polls show that most of the population is tired of the constant requests for presidential vacancies.

"We hope that members of Congress act taking into account people's opinion at this time. 80% of the population wants President Martin Vizcarra to complete his term in office (on July 28, 2021). They should not use a complaint as a pretext to impeach the president; that can't be done because it would do a lot of harm to the country (...)," he indicated.

According to Martos, the population requires a united political class, especially at these times when it is necessary to join forces with the aim of facing the COVID-19 impacts.

"We hope that tomorrow (Monday) the vast majority of Congress members will listen to the people. Many have a democratic spirit, I have a lot of respect for them, and I ask them to continue working together to face the problems that the country has and to stop confrontations," he said.

The Cabinet chief also ratified that the Ministerial Cabinet defends governance and institutionalism in the country.

"We, Peruvians, need to stand united in this difficult time that the country is going through due to the pandemic; we must put aside confrontations," he stressed.
