Peru: President requests citizens to vote and respect results

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Friday called on Peruvians to fulfill their civic duty by voting and respecting the official results, which will be issued by electoral authorities following the presidential runoff election.

"I call on all citizens so that, as soon as the Election Day (June 6) ends, we maintain serenity and wait for the official results, which will be delivered to us by electoral authorities," he expressed.

Similarly, the Head of State asked Peruvians to participate in the electoral process, attending voting centers in an orderly manner, and complying with the biosafety measures established within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a televised address to the nation, the top official urged candidates participating in the electoral race and their political organizations "to scrupulously respect the will of the Peruvian people expressed at the polls."

"I am confident that the Peruvian people, as well as public and private institutions, will respect the electoral results and will collaborate in ensuring a peaceful transition (of power) into Peru's Bicentennial," he stressed.

Guaranteed international observation

The statesman recalled that he had recently met with members of the Organization of American States' (OAS) Electoral Observation Mission, which reaffirmed its willingness to support the development of the electoral process.

"The various electoral observation missions have recognized that the Peruvian electoral process is being carried out freely and transparently, complying with international standards, under the leadership of autonomous and independent electoral bodies," he affirmed.

Transition process

Furthermore, the Peruvian leader announced that —once the National Elections Board (JNE) issues the official results in their entirety— his administration will summon the election winner to launch the respective transition process.

"It is imperative that the elected person actively participate in the transfer of power process and start receiving the government's message on the first day that his/her election is confirmed," Mr. Sagasti indicated.

The president also said that his administration has been respecting the principle of neutrality, in addition to providing the electoral system institutions with the necessary resources to fulfill their duties.

As is known, Keiko Fujimori (Fuerza Popular) will face Pedro Castillo (Peru Libre) in the presidential runoff election this Sunday.

Mr. Sagasti was sworn in as President of the Republic on November 17, 2020, and is set to leave office on July 28, 2021.
