The Peruvian Government has fully complied with the principle of neutrality during the ongoing electoral process, said President Francisco Sagasti, who requested citizens to vote in the presidential runoff election scheduled for June 6.

Within this framework, the Head of State guaranteed that the democratic will of the people will be fully respected by his administration.

"The democratic will (of the people) will be fully respected. I invite all citizens to vote in the second round and democratically elect the person who will lead the destiny of the country and to scrupulously respect the results at the polls," he expressed.

In this sense, a directive was issued to all Executive Branch entities to ensure that public officials do not take sides with any candidate.

"We have provided the resources and all the necessary support to the electoral bodies so that they bring the electoral process to a successful conclusion, and without any setbacks," he said.

The statesman also highlighted the autonomous performance of the National Elections Board (JNE) and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), as well as the high voter turnout during the first round of elections.

"The international observation missions have testified to the good organization, fairness, and transparency of our elections, even amid the difficult circumstances that the pandemic has caused," he added.

Transparency

Moreover, the President specified that another commitment assumed was the strengthening of democratic institutions and the fight against corruption.

The top official stressed that his administration "is showing that it is possible to be transparent and honest in the exercise of political power."

"When necessary, we investigated and sanctioned improper actions, opening the way for the corresponding authorities to act in accordance with their mandates," he indicated.

Remarks were made on Friday while providing a report on the first six months as head of the Transition and Emergency Government.

As is known, Mr. Sagasti was sworn in as President of the Republic on November 17, 2020, and is set to leave office on July 28, 2021.
