The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Wednesday called on citizens to remain calm during the presidential runoff election's electoral campaign, as he requested Peruvians to accept the results of the popular will to be expressed at polls on June 6, 2021.

Within this framework, the Head of State highlighted the role that the board has played in electoral processes.

"This role has been fundamental for the consolidation of democracy in our country," Mr. Sagasti noted.

"The independence and autonomy of the National Elections Board (JNE) has been strengthened in recent decades and contributes to the progressive consolidation of the democratic system," he said.

Likewise, the statesman expressed his solidarity with the JNE, the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), and their authorities in the face of questionings to their impartiality and efficiency, which he deemed as "without any arguments."

In this sense, the top official requested "all citizens and candidates in the electoral process' second round to remain calm, preserve order, and accept the results of the popular will expressed at the polls."

Moreover, the President emphasized and ratified that "the Transition and Emergency Government maintained, maintains, and will maintain strict neutrality. Thus, it will not give in to undue, untimely, or unfounded pressure, which attempts to question our impartiality."

Mr. Sagasti also emphasized that —as has been witnessed during the evolution of the first electoral round— "we have fully fulfilled this commitment."

Lastly, he recalled that one of the commitments assumed upon being sworn in as President of the Republic in November 2020 was to support and guarantee the holding of elections on the nation's Independence Bicentennial, so that these are "free, transparent, and reliable," with respect to the autonomy and independence of electoral bodies.

Remarks were made during his virtual participation in the solemn session for the 90th anniversary of the National Elections Board (JNE).
