Peru President: Joint response with regions is the way to face coronavirus

13:49 | Lima, Apr. 21.

A joint and articulated response with regions is the proper way to confront the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic at the national level, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra affirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

"Our priority as a Government is to be able to articulate and coordinate joint actions to properly combat the disease throughout the country. We have already visited the northern Tumbes (Region). And today, we are here in the south to hold a meeting with the COVID-19 Operations Command team in Moquegua. Our purpose is to evaluate the developed action plan and be able to validate it with the operational plan at the national level," he expressed.

In order to contain the coronavirus spread, the Head of State stressed, regions must implement adequate measures —taking into account the criteria used at the national level, such as compulsory social immobilization and social distancing.

"The instructions are the same for all of Peru and are based on the experience of what truly works. This short experience allows us to have clarity of what should or should not be done. We know that the virus spreads through people. So, if we want the virus not to move, we must prevent people from moving. If we succeed, the disease will be under control and we can eliminate it," he said.

"Many countries manage the disease without quarantine measures because their populations are disciplined and comply with the provisions. If we all comply and respect them (the provisions), we will not need another additional measure," he added.

The statesman also reiterated that concentrations of people shall be avoided. "Until the disease is over, there can be no social, friend, or family gatherings. Instead of a show of affection, it is a show of irresponsibility," he stated.

On the other hand, the President indicated that there are 41 confirmed coronavirus cases in Moquegua —only three of them in hospitalization. For this reason, he warned of the importance of timely monitoring the citizens diagnosed as positive but who remain at home following the treatment.

Joined by Ministers Walter Martos (Defense) and Victor Zamora (Health), as well as the Moquegua Governor, the Head of State participated in an informative meeting with the COVID-19 Operations Command team in said region.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the measure was extended thru April 26.

Tuesday marks the thirty-seventh day of mandatory social isolation.
