Peru: Government announces fines for those who violate coronavirus quarantine

13:37 | Lima, Apr. 13.

The people who violate the social isolation measures —decreed by the Government to stop the spread of coronavirus in Peru— will be fined, President Martin Vizcarra announced on Monday afternoon.

The top official affirmed that —after four social isolation weeks— the time has come to be stricter and whoever fails to comply with the measure will be entitled to a fine, whose amount will be detailed in the regulation to be published Tuesday.

Mr. Vizcarra highlighted that some stores or markets have drawn circles on the sidewalks to promote social distancing among consumers. "That has been done voluntarily, but it also must be done in other spaces."

More points of sale

Moreover, the President asked district mayors to coordinate with the Ministry of Agriculture to implement more points of sale of agricultural products, thus avoiding crowds around single markets, which increase the risk of contagion.

"The results we have seen in the curves are good, but they could be even better; we still lack the commitment of those who are not complying with the social isolation measures," he concluded.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Monday marks the twenty-ninth day of mandatory social isolation.
