Peru President: It is not time to change the Constitution

00:00 | Lima, Jan. 30.

The President of the Republic, Martin Vizcarra, on Wednesday night affirmed that "it is not the time, nor the opportunity" to propose a Constituent Assembly aimed at changing the Political Constitution of Peru —in force since 1993.

The Head of State indicated that the current Political Constitution "must be respected" and if an adjustment is required in some aspect, it should be done.

"I believe that it is not the moment nor the opportunity, but what I do believe is that the specific articles —which need to be updated— must be done so because we are in a world so dynamic that it requires modifying some concepts and adapting them to the current times," he told Canal N news channel.

Likewise, the statesman noted that —in order to make specific amendments— consensus must be sought among the diverse political forces.

"This is a Congress that will be in office for a year and a half, the year and a half that we have left as the Executive (Branch), so let's prioritize what we agree on, so let's not waste time discussing the discrepancies," he added.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
