Peru President highlights start of academic year at 96% of public schools

10:30 | Lima, Mar. 14.

President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday underlined the successful start of the 2019 academic year at 96% of public schools across Peru.

In this sense, more than 6 million pupils returned to classes on Monday.

According to the Head of State, his administration undertakes efforts so that no student is left behind in education, noting the remaining 4% of schools —currently facing difficulties— are being assisted.

"We must all work for education," the top official stressed.

The statesman also praised the efforts made by some 400,000 teachers, especially the ones who work in remote areas of Peru.

In this sense, President Vizcarra's administration expanded by 11% the budget intended for this sector in 2019 in order to increase the salary of teachers and address the social debt.

The Head of State went on to add that the goal by 2021 —the Inca nation's Independence Bicentennial— is to have standard-designed and safe schools for all the students in the country.

He was joined by new Education Minister Flor Pablo on this occasion.
