Peru President: Foreign policy based on peace, integration and democracy

13:38 | Lima, Feb. 3.

The President of the Republic, Martin Vizcarra, on Monday asked the national ambassadors based in the Americas' countries to continue working on the integration of Peru to the region and the rest of the world, in addition to strengthening relations with neighboring countries at binational cabinets.

During a meeting with ambassadors representing Peru in countries of the Americas and in the permanent missions to the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations (UN), the Head of State stressed the need to strengthen the country's presence abroad and actively participate in integration spaces with the aim of improving citizens' quality of life.

"Let's continue working together, so that Peru's voice becomes increasingly active and can be heard around the world, so that in the year and a half we have left as Government, we can lay the foundations for a more united and more prosperous country (...)," he expressed.

In his speech, the top official stressed that Peru has a foreign policy aimed at peace, democracy, development, and integration, since those are the main values and objectives to which the country has been traditionally committed and which remain in force with a view to the
country's Independence Bicentennial (2021).

The statesman stressed that the current challenge is to continue strengthening the State-run institutions, in order to guarantee a better quality of life and higher levels of representation for the benefit of Peruvians, inside and outside the national territory.

In this regard, the President stressed that Peru is a democratic country where there is separation and independence of powers, which respects fundamental freedoms, and undertook a process of reforms within the framework of the Constitution while being supported by its citizens.

"The (recent parliamentary) elections, as recognized by the international community, were free and transparent. The way in which Peruvians elected a new parliamentary representation is an authentic expression of democracy," he stated.

Furthermore, the dignitary said Peru has made plenty of progress so far this century thanks to the valuable contribution of the Foreign Affairs Ministry. This effort allowed the country to be competitively inserted into the world, the APEC, the Pacific Alliance, and other spaces, which have allowed the Inca nation to establish standards for the
development of economic and trade policies.

"We need effective institutions not only in the domestic sphere, but also in the international one, in order to manage global affairs more efficiently and face challenges such as climate change, inequality, or organized crime," he told the attending ambassadors.
