Peru President: Early general elections proposal submitted due to public outcry

10:52 | Iquitos (Loreto region), Aug. 19.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra has affirmed the early general elections by 2020 proposal was submitted —by his administration to Congress— due to public outcry, as the population demands the strengthening of institutionalism and better representation.

In this sense, the Head of State reiterated the constitutional reform initiative is a way out of the political entrapment rejected by the citizens.

According to the top official, even though Peru is a wealthy nation, it does not have enough budget to meet the citizens' needs, as many of the resources are lost to corruption, which cannot be allowed

Likewise, he stressed his administration is decentralist, as it works with regional and local authorities, as well as listens to the peoples' demands.

Furthermore, President Vizcarra pointed out his administration does not work just from an office. Thus, he visits —two or three times a week— remote areas in the coast, highlands, and jungle

"No one will defeat us if we are together; we will achieve progress and development," he said.

Remarks were made during the closing ceremony of ExpoAmazonica 2019.
