The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Thursday called on the population not to relax the protection measures or to lower their guard in complying with the health regulations to avoid COVID-19 contagion.

"I call for responsibility from all Peruvians. Vaccines promise a hopeful future not tomorrow or in 15 days, but four or six months from now. During that time, we will continue to live with the virus; if we relax measures, lower our guard and become overconfident, the number of infections, hospitalizations and deceased citizens will increase," he expressed.

The Head of State said that —during these five months facing the virus— there have been clear and defined stages in the evolution of the pandemic. The initial stage —from March to April— saw a sustained increase in infections. However, infections stabilized in May, and there was a slow decline in June.

"In July, as part of the reactivation and resumption of (economic) activities, the nationwide quarantine was lifted, and infections began to increase again in August, which led us to make adjustments in the state of emergency," he indicated.

Faced with this, the top official reaffirmed that the support and responsibility from all citizens is needed.

The statesman also said that citizens protect themselves in their journeys to get to work, at their workplaces and during the visits to markets by complying with social distancingHowever, an excess of confidence has been witnessed at meetings with friends, family or acquaintances.

Remarks were made in a press conference held at the Government Palace in Lima.

President Vizcarra was joined by Prime Minister Walter Martos and other Cabinet members on the occasion.
