Peru President: We will not let our guard down against COVID-19

The Government of Peru will not let its guard down and will continue to persevere in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic nationwide, President Martin Vizcarra affirmed on Tuesday.

While visiting the facilities of Lima's Ate Vitarte Hospital for COVID-19 patients, the Head of State indicated that the disease is starting to ease in some regions.

In this sense, the top official expressed confidence that this trend will gradually be replicated throughout the country.

"We will not lower our guard. Instead, we will be persistent thru the end (of the pandemic) in order to be able to say: mission accomplished," he expressed.

Likewise, the statesman recognized the efforts undertaken by the medical, healthcare and administrative personnel who work in said State-run medical center. Currently, they total 800 health servers.

The Peruvian leader said that this hospital has 60 mechanical ventilators and relies on a capacity to serve 400 COVID-19 patients, adding that it represents the State's efforts to combat the new coronavirus.

"The infrastructure and equipment (of this hospital) would be nothing without human resources. We trust you and appreciate your efforts. Health personnel have had an important role in society and, in these circumstances, they fulfill a crucial and relevant mission," he concluded.

The President was joined by Health Minister Victor Zamora on this occasion.

The event took place within the framework of a compulsory social isolation imposed to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading in the South American country.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the mandatory quarantine was extended until June 30.

Tuesday marks the eighty-sixth day of mandatory social isolation in Peru.
