Peru President calls for further efforts to boost number of women in authority roles

18:00 | Lima, Nov. 29.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra lamented that mayoresses lead only 92 of over 1,800 municipalities, but noted the Government will continue to strive towards improving parity, thus allowing women into positions of authority and letting them help meet the national goals.

"We are talking about 92 mayoresses nationwide. They account for 5% of municipal authorities. Besides, no woman has been appointed as head of any of the 25 regional governments. The sex ratio is balanced at the Executive Branch level, where 9 out of the 18 ministers are women. We respect parity," he expressed.

Moreover, he claimed that the Executive Branch is rendering all the necessary support to mayoresses for their administration to be successful and for efforts to be articulated —through openness and dialogue— in order to address municipal administration problems, according to particular needs of provinces and districts across Peru.

The President addressed the provincial and municipal mayoresses present at the event, saying the budget they are allocated should be spent in the best possible way throughout the year, with transparent actions and rooting out corruption, a scourge that seeks to enter institutions

In this regard, he assured the Executive Branch is working with authorities —whose spending was not appropriate to identify the problems that arose over the past months— so that, next year, they can make wiser spending decisions in crucial works that directly benefit the population.

Similarly, he recalled that local authorities are the ones who are the closest to the population and are directly aware of the needs that must be met.

As is known, the Vizcarra administration is committed to fighting violence against women and boosting gender equality in the South American country.
