Peru President calls for examining candidates' proposals and backgrounds for 2020 election

15:05 | Piura (Piura region), Dec. 19.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday urged the population to examine proposals and backgrounds of candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for January 26, 2020.

Speaking from Piura region —where he paid a working visit— the Head of State considered that the lack of enthusiasm compared to other electoral processes is normal.

However, the top official explained, this behavior is associated with the fact that the year is coming to an end, as well as with the proximity of Christmas and New Year celebrations.

"We have to examine their proposals and backgrounds, because candidates can say they will fight corruption, but then we realize that they are involved in a series of corruption scandals. So, you have to examine their backgrounds, experience, proposals, and make a decision accordingly," he recommended.

In this sense, the statesman remarked that "nothing superfluous and unnecessary" is being elected. Voters will be participating in a process to choose members of the first branch of government.

"Therefore, we have to try to make a good choice and this should be replicated in all regions, because this process is different to other types of elections —like the one conducted to elect a new President. We are assessing legislators that will represent a region (…)," he explained.

The Peruvian leader is confident that the electoral campaign —aimed at electing a new Parliament— will gain strength during the first week of January, thus generating the enthusiasm it deserves.
