Peru President: We seek to work non-stop to complete reconstruction works in the north

11:54 | Piura (Piura region), Dec. 19.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed that his administration will work non-stop to complete the reconstruction works in areas affected by Coastal El Niño phenomenon, including Piura and other northern regions.

In his speech, after overseeing the commissioning of Ignacio Escudero Bridge, Vizcarra explained that there is still much work to do, but these efforts should be made together with district and provincial mayors, the regional governor, and the central government, with the aim of addressing the problems affecting the population.

"The reconstruction of Piura and northern Peru is underway. The works can be seen, including roads, hospitals, educational institutions, irrigation channels, and water inlets. We have not finished yet, but we are in the middle of the process, and these types of works demonstrate our hard work and that we are not going to stop until the reconstruction process in Piura is fully completed," he expressed.

The Peruvian leader recalled that the road was affected by Coastal El Niño phenomenon in 2017. On that occasion, he pledged to provide a definite solution to prevent traffic on the road from being interrupted.

According to the Head of State, experts suggest that the road should be 252 meters long, "so, this bridge —expected to last 80 years— will be safe enough to prevent Manuela Ravine from interrupting the traffic when there is heavy rain."

"But this is not the only bridge on the 'to do' list. Some others are in the process of construction. That is, an additional 17 will be completed next year. That's what we promised and we are going to fulfill that," he said.

Peru's top official noted that another major work is about to be completed in Ignacio Escudero (Sullana province): a wastewater and drinking water treatment plant.

"I suggested the construction of a bridge, and here it is, finished. Now, the drinking water and wastewater treatment plant that I offer involves another commitment," he added.
