Peru President advocates for comprehensive political reform

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday advocated for a comprehensive political reform aimed at strengthening the democratic system and political parties.

In this sense, the Head of State affirmed the recent meeting between the Executive Branch's representatives and Congress' political groups —to address this issue— shows that political reform is a priority.

According to him, one of the conclusions they reached is that the political reform should be in force by the next general elections in 2021, the country's Independence Bicentennial.

Thus, it is necessary to work faster in order to approve the bills requiring constitutional modification and —therefore— two legislatures for the corresponding approval.

Likewise, the top official indicated the political reform is comprehensive. For that reason, it must be assessed jointly so it can have the desired effect.

Concerning the constitutional complaint filed by Attorney General Zoraida Avalos against her predecessor Pedro Chavarry, the statesman reiterated he respects the separation of powers, adding the corresponding sanctions must be applied at the right time. In Peru, the President does not appoint the Attorney General.

Furthermore, he mentioned parliamentary immunity must not create impunity. Therefore, one of the political reform proposals is for the Supreme Court to be able to lift Congress members' parliamentary immunity.

President Vizcarra also noted that Prime Minister Salvador del Solar and Justice-Human Rights Minister Vicente Zeballos will appear before Parliament's Constitution Commission with the purpose of supporting the 12 projects submitted by the Executive Branch. Four of them require constitutional amendments.

Last week, the statesman said that 70% of citizens approve this reform.

Finally, the Head of State reaffirmed he will not run in the 2021 presidential elections.
