Peru PM: If we want a different country, we should not be tolerant of corruption

16:20 | Lima, Dec. 5.

Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos on Thursday affirmed that if Peruvian citizens want a different country, it is necessary not to tolerate corruption.

Within the framework of the presentation of the "11th National Survey on Corruption Perceptions in Peru 2019," the cabinet chief said the Government has promoted specific public policies "such as the approval of the Guidelines for Integrity and the Fight against Corruption."

"We want a different country, with equity and opportunities, but in order to achieve that, we must not be tolerant of corruption. We all have to join forces in this task; the country expects the involvement of all Peruvians," he expressed.

In his capacity as the High Level Anti-Corruption Commission chairman, Zeballos said the intention to achieve this change in mentality will enable the nation "to have sound, strong, and independent institutions."

"We are very close to the (2021 Independence) Bicentennial, which should not only be visualized as a historical date, but as an opportunity for us to all change our attitude and for the main message to become one of honesty, decency, and transparency. That way we will become a greater nation," he stated.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the Integrity Week, an activity that seeks to promote a space for reflection on the impacts of corruption and a more active participation of the people, as well as of institutions in order to raise the integrity standards in the South American country.

The event takes place on November 5-11.
