Peru President: We must fight corruption in all institutions

15:44 | Tucume (Lambayeque region), Mar. 19.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed it is necessary to fight corruption in all institutions, in regards to the alleged influence peddling accusation against Congressman Roberto Vieira.

According to Panorama TV show, Vieira had asked his cousin —and businessman— Guillermo Venegas for US$20,000 in exchange for lifting a sanction on his ship imposed by the Production Ministry.

In this sense, the Head of State informed Production Minister Rocio Barrios wrote a report on this matter and ordered a thorough investigation —within the sector— to determine if other officials supported the legislator on this matter.

Likewise, the top official noted the probe opened by Congress and the Attorney General's Office against the lawmaker, adding he hopes they will act firmly and —if necessary— punish the lawmaker.

"We must fight corruption in all institutions. We must be vigilant, and we are doing so. We have suggested that to regional governments and municipalities," the statesman expressed.

Furthermore, President Vizcarra affirmed that one of his administration's main goals is to combat this scourge, as it does not let Peru move forward.

On the other hand, he indicated the government works in favor of education, health, and communication sectors.
