The fight against climate change is the most important challenge the world must face without further delay to ensure a sustainable development that leaves no one behind, Peruvian Prime Minister Salvador del Solar has affirmed.
The Prime Minister presented the initiative moved forward by
Peru and Spain, with the support of the
World Health Organization (WHO), in order to take immediate actions to fight against air pollution, which causes death of more than 7 million people per year.
"I am pleased to announce that 41 countries have committed to this powerful initiative that seeks to improve the clean air standards for (the well-being of) our citizens. We are not only talking about the governments' commitment; the cities must be the essential allies in climate actions, as it is in the big urban conglomerates where millions of people demand permanent transportation, energy and health (services)," he emphasized.
In this regard, he acknowledged the commitment already made by 71 cities —including Lima— to improve air quality that has a potential impact on the health of around 600 million people.
The Prime Minister highlighted the message delivered by a group of young people at the start of the
Climate Action Summit 2019 to urgently prioritize climate change in order to ensure a healthy, more egalitarian and prosperous environment for present and future generations.
"Count on Peru's determined commitment to continue promoting and leading these initiatives," Del Solar said.
The
UN Climate Action Summit 2019 brings together leaders from all over the world to find solutions to the climate crisis and protect the planet.
