Peru PM: Dialogue is path to solve Las Bambas conflict

13:33 | Lima, Apr. 22.

Prime Minister Salvador del Solar on Monday affirmed the Peruvian Government has favored and maintained a space for dialogue to solve the problems of Cotabambas Province (Apurimac region), where Las Bambas mining project is located.

In this sense, the cabinet chief indicated dialogue is the path to find solutions to the requests instead of forceful measures, such as road blockades.

"It is crucial for us to understand that we must work for the development of Cotabambas Province, Apurimac region, and the country (…)," he told RPP radio and TV station.

Concerning the communities' request for the attendance of Judicial Branch and Public Ministry representatives in the upcoming meeting, Del Solar informed the Government will notify the institutions about the invitations. However, they cannot assure their assistance.

Likewise, the high-ranking official pointed out Justice Minister Vicente Zeballos will be present at the gathering, so he can explain what his portfolio can do regarding the complaints against Cotabambas protestors over the road blockade.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister underlined talks will also be held with Cotabambas Province representatives and not only with those of Fuerabamba Community.

"We must assess the development plan, which was signed by then-Transport-Communications Minister (Edmer Trujillo) and President Vizcarra. It is a development plan for Cotabambas Province," he explained.

The Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) announced the next meeting with the communities involved in Las Bambas conflict will take place on Wednesday.
