Peru: PM asks Congress permission to present gov't program before July 28

12:16 | Lima, Jul. 16.

New Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano on Thursday asked Congress Chairman Manuel Merino to allow him to attend a plenary session prior to July 28, with the aim of presenting the government program and requesting the confidence vote of legislators.

Both politicians held a meeting at Parliament headquarters earlier today to discuss the legislative agenda and presentation before Congress members.

In this sense, the high-ranking official pointed out that there was a broad and frank dialogue.

He also stressed that aspects related to budget execution —at the national, regional, and municipal government levels— were addressed.

"I have made a request: to appear before Congress' plenary session so that, in accordance with the Constitution, I can present the government program and request a vote of confidence prior to July 28, given the urgency we are experiencing and because it is convenient for the President to deliver his Address to the Nation joined by a confirmed cabinet," he expressed.

The head of the Ministerial Cabinet said that his proposal will be reviewed by the Board of Spokespersons at Congress.

Yet Cateriano said he hopes that his request will be met in view of the national emergency.

As is known, President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday administered the oath of office to members of a reshuffled Cabinet led by Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano, who replaces Vicente Zeballos in the post.
