The
Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) in Cusco urged political organizations, visitors, tour operators, and citizens in general to refrain from engaging in campaign activities at
Machu Picchu ahead of the 2026 Regional and Municipal Elections, scheduled for October 4.
The DDC urged compliance with current regulations protecting the nation's cultural heritage, noting that Machu Picchu is governed by the Rules on Use and Tourism Visits for the Conservation of the Inca City of Machu Picchu (Ministerial Resolution No. 070-2017-MC).
It is also subject to the Electoral Propaganda Regulations (Resolution No. 0844-2025-JNE) of the National Elections Board.
The regulations strictly prohibit visitors from entering with banners, signs, posters, or clothing for political or commercial purposes that violate the neutrality and sacred nature of these spaces.
"The Machu Picchu Llaqta, archaeological parks, and other heritage properties may not be used as venues for political campaign propaganda or activities that contravene regulations protecting and preserving cultural heritage," the statement said.
Moreover, the document notes that the country's archaeological sites are subject to protection and conservation regulations that must be respected by all individuals and organizations carrying out activities in these areas.
