Climate disaster risk guidelines for World Heritage Sites in Peru approved

The Ministry of Culture (Mincul) has approved guidelines for planning disaster risk management stemming from climate change at World Heritage sites in Peru.


Ministerial Resolution No. 000314-2026-MC, published Tuesday in the legal regulations section of the Official Gazette El Peruano, contains this provision.

It covers properties included on the World Heritage List under the 1972 Convention of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).


The document is titled "Methodological Guide: Planning Disaster Risk Management Influenced by Climate Change for World Heritage Properties in Peru."

It provides methodological guidance, technical criteria, and practical tools for disaster risk management associated with climate change in planning and administrative instruments for World Heritage properties.


These measures aim to "contribute to risk identification, analysis, and reduction," as well as to strengthen the resilience of these sites and ensure their long-term conservation.


List of World Heritage properties

Among the properties recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage are the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (Cusco region); the Chavin de Huantar Archaeological Site (Ancash region); the Chan Chan Archaeological Zone (La Libertad region); and Manu National Park (Madre de Dios and Cusco regions).


It further includes the pre-Hispanic road network known as the Qhapaq Nan, which crosses seven regions; the Sacred City of Caral in Barranca province (Lima region); and the Nazca Lines and the Pampas de Jumana Lines (Ica region).

Also included are Rio Abiseo National Park (San Martin region), the Chankillo Archaeoastronomical Complex (Ancash region), and the historic centers of Arequipa and Lima.



The guide was approved amid forecasts regarding the impact of the El Nino phenomenon on Peru, with potential consequences including heavy rainfall, flooding, and mudslides.
