Peru's rainforest Loreto region is on its way to overcoming the second COVID-19 wave and now registers a significant decrease (around -80%) in new infections, Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) Chief Carlos Calampa revealed on Wednesday.

According to the official, this region is calm because now only 127 COVID-19 patients are registered in the different provinces.

Calampa stressed that there is also a sharp decrease in the number of coronavirus-related deaths, as well as in the amount of patients admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU).

"At the highest peak, we registered 24 deaths, now there are 1 or 2. We do not have a great demand for oxygen or (ICU) beds. This enables us to provide adequate disinfection and cleaning," Calampa said in remarks to Andina news agency.

The official added that the number of patients supported by mechanical ventilation has decreased from 51 to 30.

This is not the first time that Loreto has managed to reverse the negative trend. Instead, it records a significant decrease in new coronavirus cases.

Last September, the region had also reported a decrease in new cases. In 2020, Loreto had registered peaks of up to 1,300 new cases per week.

Given the great decrease in infected citizens, Calampa announced that Iquitos Modular Hospital will be uninstalled, adding that Kanatari Pre-Hospital Center will be closed, as there are not any patients.

The reasons for the control of those infected in Loreto —according to official— are two: The first is because of the early appearance of the second wave in Loreto.
