Peru's President: We must work together in fight against COVID-19 pandemic

17:46 | Iquitos (Loreto region), Mar. 18.

Peruvians must work together, in solidarity, without dividing people, and telling the truth, in order to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, the President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti said on Thursday.

"All we can do is work together, in solidarity, not diving people, telling the truth and saying things as they are, hoping and being confident that our sacrifice and daily commitment is the best tribute we can pay to those who have died (from this disease)," the statesman pointed out.

Remarks were made during a visit to the rainforest city of Iquitos in Loreto region, where he participated in the christening and launching of three vessels built by the Navy Industrial Services (SIMA).

The above-mentioned vessels include an Itinerant Social Action Platform (PIAS) called "Rio Yavari" and two river barges called "Lores" and "Castilla," whose construction has created over 300 direct and indirect jobs since 2018 while contributing directly to the revitalization of the economy in Loreto region.

President Sagasti said that "milestones like those that took place today, in which we celebrate with the christening and launching of these vessels, are an example of the work carried out by our Armed Forces and their contribution not only to the defense of the country, but also to its development."

"In addition to the PIAS, we have the Tayta plan and a series of initiatives in remote and hard-to-reach areas of the country, mainly in a region as vast as Loreto," Mr. Sagasti pointed out.

"These programs have provided basic services to people throughout the country and, therefore, we must thank not only the members of the Armed Forces but also public servants, who have contributed efficiently, mainly to health and education, as well as other activities undertaken by the State," he added.

On the other hand, the Peruvian leader urged members of the Armed Forces and the National Police, as well as health staff working on the frontline in the battle against COVID-19, not to lower their guard in the face of an eventual third wave.
