Peru Justice Min: "It is more reasonable and realistic to hold referendum in December"

13:55 | Lima, Aug. 20.

Peruvian Justice and Human Rights Minister Vicente Zeballos affirmed it is more reasonable and realistic to hold the Executive Branch-proposed referendum —on constitutional reforms— this December.

As is known, the referendum is intended to achieve amendments in the political and justice systems.

According to Zeballos, his petition to set a date is aimed at materializing and carrying out this consultation process, since the schedule cannot be established by the Executive Branch.

"(…) we said it would be ideal to hold the referendum along with the regional and municipal elections, but the date is too close, and it is no longer possible (…)," he told Canal N local channel.

The official affirmed Congress is an independent body, and it can incorporate more topics in the referendum. However, adding more questions to the four —that have already been proposed by the Executive Branch— would only confuse citizens.

The Executive Branch expects Parliament to take into consideration the urgency of this issue, as well as to assess and make a prompt decision on these initiatives.

He went on to add Peru President Martin Vizcarra leads the justice reform process, after he had called for a Justice System Reform Commission and a Parliament extraordinary session in order to evaluate the case of CNM's former magistrates, who were involved in a major scandal.
