Peru: Government-acquired COVID-19 vaccines are safe, internationally endorsed

Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Wednesday affirmed that all vaccines purchased by the Government are safe, effective, and rely on all international support.

Within this framework, the Cabinet chief stressed that

the immunization process is carried out successfully nationwide.

In this sense, the high-ranking official stressed that these doses are the best shield against COVID-19 and protect the lives of the entire population.

"We reiterate to the population that all vaccines purchased by the Peruvian Government are safe, effective, and rely on international support, including the World Health Organization. We must be calm because we have been receiving vaccines that protect our lives," she expressed.

The Prime Minister reported that more than 9.7 million doses have been administered, adding that more than 3.7 million people are already fully vaccinated; that means 15.23% of the initial target population.

Likewise, the high-ranking official indicated that it was possible to immunize 79,000 rural school teachers as of Tuesday, and this will enable children from different areas to return to face-to-face classes.

"We encourage rural school teachers to go and get vaccinated; the vaccine is the best protection against COVID-19," she emphasized.

Regarding the control of the pandemic, the government's spokeswoman indicated that there is good news at the national level affirming that infections continue to decline over the last 14 weeks. Deaths have also been reduced for 11 consecutive weeks.

"The situation in Arequipa confirms the improvement as there is reduction in the number of infections and deaths. In Loreto, there is a slight downward trend, but Health Ministry teams, in coordination with the regional government, have been following up on the situation,” she pointed out.

Concerning the transfer process, Bermudez assured that the new administration —to take office on July 28— will receive an orderly administration, which will enable its members to "catch up fast and maintain the vaccination rate in favor of the population."

Remarks were made during a press conference held at the Government Palace in Lima.
