The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Tuesday reported that more than 8 million vaccines against coronavirus have been applied nationwide and highlighted the progress of the immunization process as outcome of the increasing acquisition of doses.

"We have applied more than 8 million doses of vaccines against COVID-19. The figure accounts for more than 10% of the population. We have advanced faster thanks to the joint efforts aimed at acquiring the largest number of doses as soon as possible," he said from the city of Huamanga.

On Teacher's Day, the top official highlighted the work of teachers all over the country who dedicate their entire lives and energy to training children and youth.

The statesman recalled that Education Minister Ricardo Cuenca had proposed a program for a gradual and safe return to face-to-face classes, adding that the immunization of at least 185,000 rural teachers kicked off today with this objective.

"The vaccination of (more than) 185,000 teachers in rural areas nationwide begins today, in such a way as to ensure the return to face-to-face classes," he indicated.

Moreover, the Peruvian leader specified that this return to classes will be voluntary in Ayacucho and the other 17 regions where the immunization of teachers has begun.

Mr. Sagasti also reiterated his call on citizens to be immunized with the doses as it is the only way to get protected against the new coronavirus.
