One year ago —on March 6, 2020— the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Peru. The virus was detected in a 25-year-old male patient who had visited Spain, France, and the Czech Republic.

At that time, the announcement was made by ex-President Martin Vizcarra and former Health Minister Elizabeth Hinostroza.

Peru's patient zero was an employee of Latam airlines, which informed that said person had been taking a vacation in Europe, where he had gotten infected and then took flights with different airlines, even on his way back to Lima.

Protocols

After the confirmation of the first case, the implementation of a national plan to face coronavirus was announced in order to strengthen the monitoring, containment, and response systems.

Likewise, a protocol concerning airports and places with high tourist influx was activated.

A mobile hospital was also set up close to Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport to handle travelers that showed symptoms of the illness.

However, cases kept increasing and the South American nation had to face one of its worse crises.
