The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Thursday affirmed that during the current situation —in which the global production of COVID-19 vaccines is not enough to meet the entire demand— it is very difficult for the private sector to purchase them.

"At this moment, there are no private buyers of vaccines that are administering it directly anywhere in the world; that situation does not exist. What exists are scammers, (they are) unscrupulous people who are trafficking in counterfeit vaccines," he emphasized.

The Head of State stressed that this information has been revealed by Interpol, warning that these cases happen in developed countries.

From Rioja Province, the top official said the Government has worked hard to purchase COVID-19 vaccines, recalling that —when he became President in November 2020— there were no signed contracts, only letters of intent.

"In a short time, we have 48 million doses guaranteed and available for 2021, and even beyond that if necessary. We continue with the negotiations to rely on more doses and ensure that no citizen is left behind without a vaccine," he pointed out.

The statesman indicated that it is not up to the Executive Branch to define when the doses arrive, but rather to the production capacity of laboratories.
