Peru: Congress declared in permanent session to debate political reform bills

13:41 | Lima, Jul. 22.

Peruvian Congress Chairman Daniel Salaverry on Monday announced Parliament is currently in a permanent session in order to debate the political reform bills submitted by the Executive Branch months ago.

"We will hold a session until (July) 25th, all the time that is necessary, tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday if we do not get to debate and vote all the bills," the official expressed.

Concerning his possible reelection to continue leading Parliament, the lawmaker indicated he has not made a decision yet.

"I am waiting for a congress member, who is not part of Fujimorism, (…) to consolidate consensus in order to run for the post. I will support and vote for him," Salaverry added.

Furthermore, Congress approved the political reform bill that modifies the law on the inscription, dissolution, and resignation from political parties.

The proposal received 68 votes in favor, 20 against, and 15 abstentions.
