Peru Libre party presidential candidate Pedro Castillo on Saturday called on the nation's professionals to join his eventual government and requested that Central Reserve Bank (BCR) Governor Julio Velarde remain leading that entity.

Within this framework, Castillo asked Velarde "that his work be permanent and consistent at the head of the BCR."

"It is necessary to provide economic peace of mind and open the doors to large investments, which have to be made democratically while complying with clear rules," he expressed.

"We will not take their property away from anyone; what has been said previously is totally false," he pointed out.

Moreover, the Peru Libre representative affirmed that he respects and recognizes the work of the Armed Forces.

"We must learn from them that gesture of loyalty to the country; they will not be politically tainted by our government," he added.

After calling "for the broadest unity of the Peruvian people," Castillo expressed gratitude to the Organization of American States; international organizations; the presidents of Latin America, the Caribbean, and other parts of the world; as well as the regional governors and mayors who have recognized that the recent elections were held democratically.

Remarks were made during a demonstration in Downtown Lima organized by Castillo's followers in support of him.

The candidate also pointed out that the presence of his supporters in that demonstration was due to their love for Peru "and not for anything else."

Electoral process

As is known, 25,287,954 Peruvians —in the country and abroad— were called to elect a new President of the Republic between candidates Keiko Fujimori and Pedro Castillo in the runoff election on June 6. Whoever wins the election will become Mr. Sagasti's successor and take office on July 28, 2021.

The presidential runoff election winner is yet to be proclaimed by the National Election Board (JNE), which must continue to resolve requests over some challenged voting records.
